Voice to Light•Chapter 02

The Storyteller

By Rejoy Krishnan•Photographer & Mentor

“From Kalam to Vijay: Painting pictures with words, then painting stories with light.”

For Rejoy Krishnan, radio was never just about being behind a microphone. It was about the people on the other side of it. Every day, he spoke to people he might never meet, making them laugh, think, question, and sometimes simply feel heard.

“One day, a listener called his show and said: “Anna… I have lost all the members of my family at different stages of my life. I have made many hasty decisions, but your voice and what you speak every day connect with me. Today, I am living because of you.””

That call changed Rejoy's understanding of his profession. He realised that being a Radio Jockey was not just a monthly paid job—it was a responsibility. Every word could reach someone who needed a voice, hope, or simply a connection.

Then came another call from a VIP and regular listener: “Do you want to meet Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam?” That question led to a one-on-one interview with the then President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. And the stories kept coming.

Rejoy went on to interview Dr. Kiran Bedi, Jonty Rhodes, Vinod Kambli, and several prominent personalities from the Indian film fraternity, including Joseph Vijay, then a successful actor and today the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

With every conversation, his fascination grew—not just with famous personalities, but with the human beings behind them. Their journeys, struggles, beliefs, and dreams.

That passion led him to produce a Gaana podcast on the life and legacy of Thiru M. Karunanidhi, ranked among the Top 5 Best Podcasts of the Year in 2021 on Gaana.

In 2015, he received the Best RJ Award from the Rotary Club of Coimbatore. His opinions were also featured in The Times of India and The Indian Express, while Ananda Vikatan wrote about him and his perspectives.

But after years of creating the “theatre of the mind,” Rejoy wanted to tell stories differently. For years, he had painted pictures with words. Now, he wanted to paint stories with light. And so, he stepped away from the microphone and picked up a camera.

“The storyteller remained. Only the medium changed.”
